Hainan Sculpture
Sculpture is different from painting from a specific angle. It is a three-dimensional concept existing in the real three-dimensional space, and belongs to an aesthetic expression of volume in space.
The difference between relief and round sculpture lies in its relative planarity and stereoscopy. Its spatial form is the so-called compressed space between the two-dimensional virtual space of painting and the three-dimensional solid space of sculpture. The compressed space limits the free development of the relief space. Relying on the plane background, the solid sense of the round sculpture is weakened, and the virtual and illusion in painting and perspective are adopted and used more to achieve the purpose of expression. Compared with the round sculpture, the relief sculpture should deal with the relationship between space and form according to the painting principles.
Sculpture forms are generally divided into round sculpture and relief sculpture. The form of relief sculpture is quite different from that of round sculpture, and its application scope is wider. Because of its different uses, it is also diverse in modern methods and artistic processing means. However, no matter what kind of relief sculpture it belongs to, the audience should not watch it from all around, but from the front.
The emergence of relief has a long history, even earlier than the writing. On the open-air rock walls of primitive society and the inner walls of caves and kilns where primitive people lived, people intentionally or unintentionally painted and carved some content related to production and life. Today, these are the embryonic forms of relief and murals.
Today, when modern civilization is highly developed, people are still creating reliefs. However, the position, content and expression of reliefs are much more advanced than before. The feature of relief is to shape or carve an image on the flat bottom plate (stacked mud board or wood board), so that the length and width ratio of the object shape remain unchanged, the outline of the shape is similar to painting, and the volume (thickness) before and after the shape is compressed.
