The full name of EPS is Electric Power Steering, which is the electric power steering system on the vehicle. The system is mainly composed of torque sensor, speed sensor, electronic control unit, motor, electromagnetic clutch and other parts. Compared with the traditional hydraulic power steering system, EPS has no hydraulic circuit and other mechanisms, so it is easier to maintain and adjust; And EPS will only start the motor to generate power assistance when steering, which can greatly reduce fuel consumption and engine power loss. The working principle of EPS is relatively simple. When the driver is steering, the torque sensor will detect the angle of the steering wheel and the magnitude of the torque, and then transmit the voltage signal to the EPS control module. The control module will send steering commands to the motor in combination with the speed and other information, thus generating steering auxiliary force.

What is the meaning of EPS light on

When the eps fault light of the driving instrument is always on, it means that there is a fault in the electronic power steering system. At this time, you need to use the diagnostic instrument to enter the system to read the fault code and carry out targeted maintenance. The eps control unit has a self diagnostic function. When the key is in the acc or on position, the eps light on the instrument will stay on for 5 seconds and then go out, indicating no fault; When the key is in the acc or on position, the eps light on the instrument will stay on for 5 seconds, which indicates that the system has a fault.

Causes of Illumination of Vehicle EPS Fault Lamp

Replacing the battery or powering off the vehicle will cause the EPS fault lamp to light up, because the data of the EPS module after powering off the vehicle will be automatically initialized or lost, and only the EPS system needs to learn again. There are two learning methods. The first is to drive the vehicle for a short distance and the fault light of EPS will disappear by itself; The second is to reset and learn through the diagnostic apparatus, and the EPS fault light will also be eliminated.

Damaged torque sensor

It will cause the EPS fault lamp to light up, accompanied by heavy steering wheel, no power assistance and other conditions, and will store the fault code of torque sensor short circuit or open circuit in the control module of the EPS system. This is because after the torque sensor is damaged, it is impossible to detect the angle of the driver turning the steering wheel and the size of the torque, and it is also impossible to feedback the torque signal to the control module, As a result, the vehicle does not have direction assistance and the EPS fault lamp lights up. During processing, only the torque sensor needs to be replaced.

EPS module damaged

It will cause the EPS fault lamp to light up, and the fault phenomenon it shows is similar to that after the torque sensor is damaged. Because the EPS module is the "central nerve" of the EPS system, it is mainly responsible for receiving signals, processing signals and sending commands. If it is damaged, it will lead to the failure of the above work, resulting in steering failure. During processing, the damaged EPS control module needs to be replaced and matched. In addition, on some models, the EPS module is integrated with the steering gear, so the problem can only be solved by replacing the steering gear assembly.

Can I continue driving when EPS light is on?

It is not recommended to continue driving under other conditions except the EPS light is on due to power failure. Because EPS light is always accompanied by steering power failure, steering wheel is heavy while light, and other failures, when the vehicle loses steering power, it will become very difficult to manually operate the steering mechanism, which will extend the steering time during driving, thus increasing the probability of vehicle accidents. No matter in terms of safety or driving stability, it is not allowed to continue driving. Instead, you should go to the after-sales service shop as soon as possible to troubleshoot and restore the functions of the EPS system.
