As a modeling language and form in sculpture art, relief has its unique modeling method. It reasonably compresses the natural image in volume in the limited modeling space, and shows people more abstract space effects through perspective, illusion and other methods. Because the relief has been compressed in the third dimension, the three-dimensional image has been flattened, and the form is also thin. The thickness of the relief limits its shaping and display space. In particular, the shallow relief is close to the plane shape. If you want to make the shape distinct, you need to rely on "lines" to strengthen the contour image. In relief, the position is usually used to express the outer contour line.

The rising position refers to the external contour of the relief image and the vertical protruding facade between the front and rear level contours and the background. It can distance the main body from the background, so that the relief has a three-dimensional sense and shows multi-level. The height of the raised position often determines the thickness of the relief and the clarity of the outer contour. At the same time, the raised position is an important means to express space and distance in the relief. Because the relief compresses the form, in the compressed relief, in order to show the front and back overlap and occlusion relationship between one form and another, the starting line should be used for processing. Therefore, it can also be said that the height of the starting line between the front and rear two figures in the relief is different, which means that the space distance between the two figures is different. Without the starting line, there is no thickness of the figure, let alone the space and distance to be expressed. Therefore, the starting line is the basis of the relief.
